Hospital Regional Universitario de Málaga
Málaga, Spain

The Hospital Regional Universitario de Málaga, historically known as Carlos Haya, is a tertiary care hospital complex belonging to the Andalusian Public Health System. As a referral center for multiple medical and surgical specialties, it serves a large and diverse population.
The institution maintains a firm commitment to clinical excellence and technological innovation. In this context, the continuous improvement of patient safety in the surgical area constitutes a fundamental strategic priority.
Joining the Safe Brain Initiative responds to the clinical need to prevent severe postoperative neurological complications, such as delirium and cognitive decline. To achieve this, we have moved beyond empirical approaches to adopt proactive perioperative neuroprotection strategies, implementing goal-directed interventions that preserve the patient’s cognitive trajectory.
This project is already underway at our hospital. We are training the clinical team, integrating new brain health protocols into our workflows, and managing the resources needed for their consolidation. Our purpose is twofold: to ensure care that provides a direct social benefit, and to structure this implementation as a foundation for clinical trials that generate new scientific evidence.
Our primary goal is to universalize perioperative brain care. In the long term, we aspire to consolidate our position as a research center within the global SBI network, contributing data from our routine practice to refine international guidelines and advance towards increasingly safe and patient-centered healthcare.
