The Royal Alexandra Hospital is situated in the historic town of Paisley, located in the west of Scotland. One of the country’s largest district general hospitals, with strong links to the University of Glasgow Medical School, it serves a population of 200,000 people from the surrounding areas and islands.

It has 760 inpatient beds and performs more than 10,000 operations annually.

SBI Program

The hospital joined the SBI programme in 2024 as Scotland’s pilot site and saw its post-operative delirium rates drop significantly over the next 12 months.

It has hosted both an EEG bootcamp and the first SBI Masterclass in the UK.

Dr. Paul McConnell

Consultant in Anaesthesia and Critical Care

Dr. Paul McConnell is a consultant in anaesthesia and critical care based at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. He has twice served as the Chair of the Scientific Ethics Committee of the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (ESAIC), and is an elected member of the ESAIC Sustainability Committee as well as the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCOA) Scottish Board and Ethics Committee.

He has taught on EEG bootcamps around the UK and organised the UK’s first SBI Masterclass.
